art gallery quiz

Time to rank your gallery goals

Dear Artists,
Before you do anything else related to galleries, let's rank what's most important to you.

1) Private collections

2) Museum shows + collections

3) Money

4) Prestige

My answers:

#1: Prestige is the one I care the most about, probably leftover from my years in academia. Or, maybe it's because I want all of my enemies to eat their words...

#2: I do want to be in more museum collections. I'm only in 1 (Hood Art Museum) but I feel like it doesn't "count" because a collector donated my print.

I wouldn't complain about a museum show, but I don't think the Frick museum is calling me any time soon...

#3: Private collections are good, but I'm more interested in collectors whose initiatives have a positive impact like Komal Shah, whose foundation aims to amplify women artists.

#4: Earning money isn't important to me .

When I'm teaching the fundamentals, I meet artists where they are at and talk about color in the context of their art. However, color is color, no matter who you're talking to.

Galleries are not the same. When I create plans for artists for approaching galleries, I feel like I am telling 1 artist to be an samurai, and another to be a mushroom forager. That's why ranking your goals matters so much.

I know many of you either don't even know where to begin, or your efforts haven't gone anywhere, both are so frustrating! I've been there myself.

You'll reach galleries without looking desperate, and level up your materials to a professional standard working with me in Art Club. Stop being confused and find out exactly what to do.

New members begin with a 1 on 1 onboarding call with me.

Art Club enrollment is closing this Friday June 12.

If you've been on the fence, now is time to snag a spot!

The ugly stage model + 12" x 4" study Dear Artists, 13 years ago, I was working on Wading, a series of lithographic crayon drawings. I was having trouble getting the figures to look dimensional. Lighting is often what creates the illusion of form, so I sculpted these figures, and then lit them. The 12" x 4" drawing above was my trial run for this process, and ultimately confirmed the path for the final works. 3' x 4' drawing Yet, I almost walked away from that first drawing. I hated that...

Dear Artists, I was a late bloomer. I look at Lauryn who has already had a solo exhibition at a NYC gallery. Then again, I had a baby and a toddler when I was in my early 30's, and was working tirelessly in academia. We all know how that turned out. A few days ago I turned 50. My older kid is in college, it's not until after 6pm that I see signs of life from my other one. Being an artist really can be about timing. After devoting years to supporting an entire generation of art school...

Dear Artists, What's your #1 challenge as an artist right now? Common challenges I see: Your piece isn't finished, but you don't know what to do next. accountability & staying motivated The more you work on a piece, the worse it gets. You're not seeing any progress, no matter how hard you work. Reply with yours, it doesn't have to be what I listed above.
