Don't listen to your parents

Dear Artists,

When you don't have a mentor or art teacher, you're probably asking your parents for help with your art. Or, maybe you're not asking, and they telling you how to make your drawing better.

The problem is, sometimes you really truly have no idea whether the colors in your painting are any good, no matter what you try.

When it comes to your art school portfolio, unless your parents are professional artists, don't take their advice. (you can tell them I said that too)

Having worked with art school applicants for over a decade, you wouldn't believe the ridiculous things I've heard parents tell their kids about art.

A parent told a student that they would be bad at architecture because it's all about math. (it's not)

If you're a parent reading this email, perhaps you feel called out. On the other hand, maybe I'm lifting a burden off your shoulders, confirming that it's time for you to step away and hand this off to mentoring sessions with me.

With mentoring, you'll know exactly what colors will improve your painting, how to fix that portrait that feels "off," and know that you can trust my expert advice.

xoxo Prof Lieu

Save time on your portfolio

With school commitments, you've got limited time to work on our portfolio. You'll need a portfolio "health check" first to be efficient with your time.

You'll know what skills you're missing, what types of pieces to make, and have a solid plan you can follow with a portfolio critique.

“Prof Lieu comes with an amazing depth, domain knowledge, as well as rich professional experience to understand a student’s need quickly, follow the student’s style and idea, and guide with encouragement and keen points to inspire the student tremendously.”

The ugly stage model + 12" x 4" study Dear Artists, 13 years ago, I was working on Wading, a series of lithographic crayon drawings. I was having trouble getting the figures to look dimensional. Lighting is often what creates the illusion of form, so I sculpted these figures, and then lit them. The 12" x 4" drawing above was my trial run for this process, and ultimately confirmed the path for the final works. 3' x 4' drawing Yet, I almost walked away from that first drawing. I hated that...

Dear Artists, I was a late bloomer. I look at Lauryn who has already had a solo exhibition at a NYC gallery. Then again, I had a baby and a toddler when I was in my early 30's, and was working tirelessly in academia. We all know how that turned out. A few days ago I turned 50. My older kid is in college, it's not until after 6pm that I see signs of life from my other one. Being an artist really can be about timing. After devoting years to supporting an entire generation of art school...

Dear Artists, What's your #1 challenge as an artist right now? Common challenges I see: Your piece isn't finished, but you don't know what to do next. accountability & staying motivated The more you work on a piece, the worse it gets.
