What broke an artist's sale

One photo

Dear Artists,

I told Cat last week that I needed some big red earrings. I send her ones I'm thinking about.

I stumbled upon these gorgeous resin drop earrings, (above) but as cool as they were, I didn't buy them. The reason: there was no photo of a person wearing the earrings.

I had no idea what the actual length was, and that was enough for me to walk away. When I work with artists to increase their sales in Art Club, I figure out what the culprit is, and then we add what's missing. In this case, it was 1 photo.

Later, I found these red garnet earrings above. From this photo, I was thinking they were a bit too wide for me. When I saw the photo below, I saw that when the earring is worn, the design didn't look too wide after all.

Gina Jiang Design convinced me to buy because I saw the art in context. My choice to not buy the other pair dad nothing to do with quality. In fact, I was sad that I couldn't get myself to buy.

You'll have terrific photos and see increased sales through the Instagram and website makeovers I do in Art Club. A photo really is a dealbreaker.

Why no one is buying your art

You probably think your art isn’t selling because your social media following is small or because your work isn’t “good enough.” Nope!

I'll tell you why in this free workshop: Secret Weapon to Selling Your Art.

Why did I say yes to writing a book...

I really am excited about it, but it's kind of kicking my butt right now!

I have to stay mum on the title and topic. Let's just say that as artists, I'm sure you will find it relevant. Be the first ones to know here.

The ugly stage model + 12" x 4" study Dear Artists, 13 years ago, I was working on Wading, a series of lithographic crayon drawings. I was having trouble getting the figures to look dimensional. Lighting is often what creates the illusion of form, so I sculpted these figures, and then lit them. The 12" x 4" drawing above was my trial run for this process, and ultimately confirmed the path for the final works. 3' x 4' drawing Yet, I almost walked away from that first drawing. I hated that...

Dear Artists, I was a late bloomer. I look at Lauryn who has already had a solo exhibition at a NYC gallery. Then again, I had a baby and a toddler when I was in my early 30's, and was working tirelessly in academia. We all know how that turned out. A few days ago I turned 50. My older kid is in college, it's not until after 6pm that I see signs of life from my other one. Being an artist really can be about timing. After devoting years to supporting an entire generation of art school...
