What I want for my birthday

Dear Artists,

I’m 50 today! Halfway there if I’m lucky. 🀩I started a book, and I’m very proud of the community here. ❀️

However, what has been most meaningful to me in the last year has been my studio practice.

The last time that I had a personal body of work was in 2014. That was fine with me, as I had plenty on my plate. At that point, I saw Art Prof as being my swan song.

Then came a turning point. My family was obsessed with the TV show The Walking Dead, and one of my kids really wanted fan art of Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon.

I envisioned a piece of wood that had a charcoal like image that was life-size. I started experimenting with a pyrography pen, and ended up doing silly zombie drawings in fumage. (Burning with a candle πŸ”₯)

Over 10 years ago, I did a few pencil sketches where I focused on the parts of my body where I saw wrinkles emerging.

One of those drawings was my postpartum belly. That idea never went anywhere, but it seemed to align perfectly with the fumage technique.

Now, I am working on my first personal body of work in years, of postpartum bellies. I’m nowhere near finished, but I really do think it’s the best work I have done so far. I’m a late bloomer!

For those of you asking what I want for my birthday: don’t just register, but show up to our free workshop: Secret Weapon to Selling Your Art this Sunday June 7, 4-5:30pm EST.

Really, that’s what I want. 🀣 I’m also not going to cook or clean anything today.

Last day to register! Add to your Google calendar.

xoxo Prof Lieu

The ugly stage model + 12" x 4" study Dear Artists, 13 years ago, I was working on Wading, a series of lithographic crayon drawings. I was having trouble getting the figures to look dimensional. Lighting is often what creates the illusion of form, so I sculpted these figures, and then lit them. The 12" x 4" drawing above was my trial run for this process, and ultimately confirmed the path for the final works. 3' x 4' drawing Yet, I almost walked away from that first drawing. I hated that...

Dear Artists, I was a late bloomer. I look at Lauryn who has already had a solo exhibition at a NYC gallery. Then again, I had a baby and a toddler when I was in my early 30's, and was working tirelessly in academia. We all know how that turned out. A few days ago I turned 50. My older kid is in college, it's not until after 6pm that I see signs of life from my other one. Being an artist really can be about timing. After devoting years to supporting an entire generation of art school...

Dear Artists, What's your #1 challenge as an artist right now? Common challenges I see: Your piece isn't finished, but you don't know what to do next. accountability & staying motivated The more you work on a piece, the worse it gets. You're not seeing any progress, no matter how hard you work. Reply with yours, it doesn't have to be what I listed above.
