Gallery breakthrough!

Mia's first solo gallery show

Dear Artists,

I am SO PROUD of Mia, who is having her first solo show!! I feel like she told me yesterday that she had interest in galleries and then BOOM, she landed a show at Archenemy Arts in Philadelphia.

Here's how Mia made it happen: (this happened over many months btw)

  • I advised her along the way. (I do that in Art Club)
  • Mia researched galleries with an illustrative style.
  • She had 1 piece in a "small works" show at Gallery Nucleus.
  • Mia posted regularly on Instagram.
  • Archenemy Arts reached out to have 1 small piece for a group show.

Mia gets more specific in this 1 min video:

  • Archenemy Arts asked Mia to contribute a piece at Aqua Art Miami.
  • Mia and I went to Miami Art Week and met them in person.
  • I made a point to tell them what a treasure Mia is hehehe.

Mia kept in touch, replied promptly, and always had her materials ready.

Working on my book, there have been a few artists who I wanted to include, but their photographs were not professional enough for me to use. I was on a tight deadline and couldn't wait for them.

You've got to be ready!!

I know galleries can feel really out of reach. The basics are that Mia 1) researched a ton, 2) had my ongoing support, 3) had materials ready, 3) used Instagram, and 4) showed up in person.

Where are you with galleries, are you just starting or wanting to level up? Reply and tell me, I love hearing from you.

xoxo Prof Lieu

Meet me in Brooklyn this week

I'm doing tours + a panel discussion at the Brooklyn Print Fair, nerd out with me about magnesium carbonate! The tours are first come, first serve and limited to 15 people.

The panel is Print Ecosystem 101: Navigating Curators, Galleries, and Academia and is on Friday, April 10, 4-5pm in Small Hall.

How do people do this for a living?!

ICYMI, I have a book coming this fall! This image pretty much sums up how it's going so far hahaha. I am in spreadsheet and file renaming hell.

I have to stay mum on the title and content, but let's just say you'll find it relevant. Be the first to find out by signing up here.

What you won't find online

Galleries are opaque, it's nearly impossible to figure out it out by yourself. Get up to date specifics on what actually gets you into a gallery with us in Art Club.

Through Art Club, I’ve learned things I could never get from the internet—direct, lived insights about the NYC art ecosystem: how gallery representation actually works, how artists navigate video making for portfolios/social media, and how to build a professional website.

Problematic Bok Choy photo from the internet Dear Artists, I've noticed a common thread among self-taught artists is how much emphasis is placed on completing a finished artwork, at the expense of the early stages. Let's say I want to draw bok choy and search for reference photos online. The photo above has highlights that are blown out which makes the form look flat. The one below is too pale and bright, and the positioning in both images is stiff and boring. photo from the internet I'm just...

What keeps me grounded Dear Artists, When I was in art school, there were concepts like warm and cool colors that felt like a slow drip that would eventually sink in. I learn best when I get to absorb a concept several times, in different formats, from different artists. At the same time, I came to rely on my mentors to keep grounded. No matter what was going on, everything would come into focus when we talked. I was at the Brooklyn Print Fair this week and met up with Andrew Raftery, who I...

My Happy Places Dear Artists, I'm writing from NYC, which exploded with printmaking this weekend with the Brooklyn Print Fair (where I did tours + a panel) and the IFPDA fair. You can pick up a $32,000 print by German expressionist Erich Heckel or a $250,000 print by contemporary artist Nicole Eisenman. I need to level up on selling my art! IFPDA is different than the average art fair because in addition to contemporary art, there are many galleries where you could purchase a monotype by...
