Let's go shopping for a Rembrandt

My Happy Places

Dear Artists,

I'm writing from NYC, which exploded with printmaking this weekend with the Brooklyn Print Fair (where I did tours + a panel) and the IFPDA fair.

You can pick up a $32,000 print by German expressionist Erich Heckel or a $250,000 print by contemporary artist Nicole Eisenman. I need to level up on selling my art!

IFPDA is different than the average art fair because in addition to contemporary art, there are many galleries where you could purchase a monotype by Degas, or an Albrecht Dürer engraving.

I remember being so baffled by this when I first went in 2003, I could just walk in there and buy a Käthe Kollwitz print? I thought that only museums could acquire historial work!

You also discover artists who you would never think to search for. Algorithms will never serve up what you can stumble upon at an art fair.

This Pavlos (Pavlos Dionyysopoulos) is an original, hand signed, dated, and numbered printed paper and wood panel multiple with perspex, in an edition of 19.

People often think about printmaking as a 2D media, but there is great sculptural potential with printmaking, and lots of cross over into book binding and paper making.

When I look at prints in person, I look closely for the impression of a copper plate into the rag paper (intaglio printmaking) but also how some ink applications can feel like a relief.

At the Brooklyn Print Fair, the standout was this Alex Dodge print, Between Mnemosyne and Lethe which was printed with an ink that was raised and shiny, as if the tiles in the scene were actual tiles sitting on the paper.

Alex Dodge worked with master printer Luther Davis and his crew at the silkscreen shop at Powerhouse Arts. Luther calls the Brooklyn Print Fair "print prom," except that everyone is nice and you don't have to buy a hideous dress.

Our next free workshop is for Self-Taught Artists on Sunday, April 26, 7-8:30pm EST, let's chat on voice together!

The workshop will be on Zoom, and be sure to register by Thurs April 23.

Conversations I cherish to this day

Some of my most cherished moments are 1 on 1 conversations with professors which shaped the artist I am today. I felt so much more focused in a way that never happened during class.

Mentoring creates a concrete plan that establishes a timeline to meet your needs. No more searching aimlessly only, or wondering what to do next.

Problematic Bok Choy photo from the internet Dear Artists, I've noticed a common thread among self-taught artists is how much emphasis is placed on completing a finished artwork, at the expense of the early stages. Let's say I want to draw bok choy and search for reference photos online. The photo above has highlights that are blown out which makes the form look flat. The one below is too pale and bright, and the positioning in both images is stiff and boring. photo from the internet I'm just...

What keeps me grounded Dear Artists, When I was in art school, there were concepts like warm and cool colors that felt like a slow drip that would eventually sink in. I learn best when I get to absorb a concept several times, in different formats, from different artists. At the same time, I came to rely on my mentors to keep grounded. No matter what was going on, everything would come into focus when we talked. I was at the Brooklyn Print Fair this week and met up with Andrew Raftery, who I...
